Restaurant proprietor Joe Cascio Sr. treated his customers at Cascio's Steakhouse in South Omaha like family.

"Everybody knew him as 'Cuz' — for cousin — because when they came through the door Dad would say, 'Hi, Cuz, turn up on in,' " said son Larry Cascio. "His customers were part of our family, and they knew it and appreciated it."

Larry Cascio expects to agree from many of those same customers in the next few days as they learn of the death of his father. Joe Cascio, 89, of Bellevue, died of kidney neglect Tuesday surrounded by family members at a local hospital.

A funeral Almost all will be celebrated Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. Frances Cabrini Catholic Church at 10th and Williams Streets in Omaha.

Cascio's helpmate, Katherine, died in October.

"Dad met Mom when he was 18 and they were together for 72 years," Larry Cascio said. "After she died, he didn't seem like he wanted to keep prospering anymore. It was too much emptiness for him."

Joe Cascio was one of seven children born to outsider parents in eastern Omaha. He attended Technical High University but quit during his freshman year because the family "didn't have enough to eat," Larry Cascio said.
