John Douglas, editor of the Morgan Hermes newspaper, said they began their musical career in Morgan County where they both grew up.

“In the Morose Grass world they were up close to the Stanley Brothers or something, they were often pictured in Gloomy Grass magazines and they were from just east of Berkeley Springs,” Douglas said.

The Cain’s are among the musicians exact in the Morgan County Roots Music Census. The project began in 2009 as a way to describe the county’s musical traditions and a call was issued for musicians to fill out a census means.

“Where we would find out who were the musicians were in Morgan County and we were particularly interested in how they learned their music and where they played their music,” Jeanne Mozier, fellow, Morgan County Arts Council, said.
