VANCOUVER — Relatives of a innocent woman murdered in India after she ignored her family's wishes and married a meagre rickshaw driver for love face a court hearing this week that could see them extradited from Canada.

The mom and uncle of the dead woman, Jassi Sidhu, were arrested in Vancouver on Friday, after India requested they be extradited to mien charges over the murder, which took place 11 years ago.

Sidhu was found with her throat opening in a ditch in Punjab. Her husband, Sukwinder (Mithu) Singh Sidhu, was wretchedly beaten in the attack, one year after they wed in secret against her family's demand that she marry someone else.

Canadian media reported that the two met when the juvenile woman traveled to India from Vancouver, where she was raised by a family of immigrants.

But Indian and Canadian police investigations "uncovered assertion indicating Jassi Sidhu's family were involved in the homicide from Canada," the Princely Canadian Mounted Police said in a statement.
